EARLY WARNING - VIRUS ALERT No. 92 - Friday, October 4, 2002.

DON'T be a victim of the KLEZ virus on October 13th. !

The I-Worm.Klez virus continues to  dominate the Top Twenty even in September at an alarming score of 72.93%
Full details of this worm were published on Wednesday, April 17, 2002, in our VIRUS ALERT No.87, which  can be viewed here.

The continued propagation of this virus may also be due to the fact that many people DON'T know that they have a "dormant" Klez in their system !!

"KLEZ" has truly become a big-time network curse on a global scale. The worm was first exposed in the spring of 2001. By February 2002 the worm handily held on to its top position in the list of the most widespread virus threats. The September Virus Top Twenty tellingly confirms that at this time, one of the worm's modifications, "KLEZ.E", represents a significant threat to the Internet users. This is why we still have not observed the tendency for the situation to gradually improve.

Presently, eight modifications of the worm are known. On the 6th of ODD months, one of them, "KLEZ.E", activates its destructive payload and wipes out all the data on infected computers. The only way victims can
restore their data is from back-up copies saved on independent disks or tapes.

This fact seems to have been overlooked by many and by the 7th. of September we received so many requests  for assistance that it was impossible to cope with them on an individual basis.

Users may not even suspect that their computers are reluctant hosts to the worm. "KLEZ" is practically unnoticeable until the day it unleashes its wrath - in this case, September 6th. On this day many lost forever
the result of much hard work.

On the 13th of even months, another version of the worm executes a payload routine, which fills all files on all available victims' computer disks with random content. These files can't be recovered and must be restored from a backup copy.

We would therefore like to remind users of this dangerous threat and recommend, once again, the importance of taking preventative measures in order to avoid the possible penetration of "KLEZ.E". Additionally, we  strongly
advise the immediate installation of the patch fixing the Microsoft Internet Explorer security system vulnerability exploited by "KLEZ" to gain penetration and infect computers. This will help avoid repeated infections and also prevent attacks from other "KLEZ" type worms that may appear in the future. This patch can be found on the Microsoft site at the following address:
