VIRUS ALERT No.74 - Wednesday, August 22, 2001.
Win32 worm Allgro.A
Due to an increasing number of inquiries to the company’s support
department Anti-virus software developer Sophos has issued the following
virus advisory about the Win32 worm Allgro.A
Allgro.A is an e-mail-aware worm that sends itself using MAPI functions.
The worm arrives in an e-mail with the
subject, "New antivirus Tool." The message body contains the text,
"Hey, checkout this new antivirus tool which
checks your system for viruses." The attached filename is antivirus.exe.
When the attachment is run, the worm
copies itself to the Windows System directory with the filename
setup30.exe.
Allgro.A then changes the Registry key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current\Version\Run\Kernel Setup so that the worm runs upon Windows start up.
Depending on the day of the week, the worm attempts to remove a commonly encountered virus from the system such as I-Worm.Sircam, I-Worm.Pretty or I-Worm.Badtrans.
On the 16th of September, the worm displays the message box,
"System protected by I-Worm.Antivirus Copyright [c] 2001 by aLL3gRo."
