Davinia.A
Anti-virus software developer Sophos reports the presence,
although not "in the wild," of the VBS virus Davinia.A (Aliases: LittleDavinia,
JS.Davinia.A, WM97.Davinia.A, and HTML.LittleDavinia). Media interest has
sparked this announcement.
Users can be initially infected by this worm by either
browsing an infected Web site or reading an infected HTML e-mail that would
attempt to browse an infected Web site. The infected Web site contains
code that exploits the Microsoft "Office 2000 UA Control" Vulnerability (details
of this vulnerability and how to patch against it are documented at Microsoft
"Office 2000 UA Control" Vulnerability).
This vulnerability allows Web sites to run Word macros
silently. If macros are allowed to run, a Visual Basic Script is dropped
that will attempt to overwrite the files in subdirectories of all local
and remote network drives.
