In over 160 countries throughout the world, Tait products
are found wherever reliable, effective and affordable radio communication
is required: from the congested airwaves of Europe and North America to
the most isolated and hostile outer reaches of the earth such as Antarctica
and the Gobi Desert.
Tait customers range from small private businesses to large multi-national corporations, government agencies, emergency services, network service providers and specialist communication agencies.
The Tait product range has grown beyond its roots in conventional two-way mobile radio to encompass a range of products and services that is as diverse as their customer base: from compact, stylish portable and mobile radios to wide area trunked radio network systems that provide integrated radio and telephone services for both voice and data communication.
The result is that Tait has the commitment, the knowledge
and the product range to satisfy all your radio communication needs.
Company founder Angus Tait has lived and breathed radio communications all his working life.
From school he went into a radio store, before joining the RNZAF at the outbreak of World War II. He was then transferred to the RAF in England where he worked on airborne radar.
Returning to New Zealand in 1947 he was soon in business designing and assembling mobile radios. This small enterprise was the forerunner of Tait Electronics Ltd, formed in 1969, in Christchurch, New Zealand, with a staff of 12 people.
This team produced a new generation of lightweight compact mobile radios which secured a majority share of the New Zealand market within a few years. An unswerving commitment to research and development enabled those initial products to be developed into the award-winning Miniphone series of mobile radios by the mid-1970s.
By its tenth anniversary, Tait had launched a range of hand-held radios and base stations. Over 25% of its production was being exported by this stage.
The first wholly owned subsidiary was opened in the
UK in 1979. The years immediately following saw further subsidiaries established
in the USA and Singapore, and the first of many export awards. The
new series of synthesised Miniphones and the new range of T300 base station
equipment were released around this time.
After a move to a larger manufacturing facility, the T500 series of mobile radios was released in the early 1980s. The success of the T500 triggered major new investment in advanced production technology and the opening of a fourth subsidiary in Australia.
The momentum, in terms of both innovation and growth, was maintained and in the mid-1980s a key strategic decision was made to move into trunking technology. Substantial investment followed in a broad range of trunked products and TaitNet systems based on the MPT1327 standard.
The acclaimed T800 series of modular base station and repeater equipment was on the market by 1990. In that year, the T700 series appeared and two years later advanced SMD techniques saw the release of the new generation T2000 mobile radios.
Additional off-shore subsidiaries were opened and in 1993 the T3000 series of hand portables and the Quasi-Sync base station/repeater systems were introduced, followed in 1994 by a family of rural telephone products.
The first in a series of mobile data despatch products for use with the T2000 radios was also launched in 1994. That range now includes sophisticated mobile data solutions including Automatic Vehicle Location, using GPS, and the use of electronic fund transfer terminals in vehicles.
The momentum of mobile radio development continued
and towards the end of 1997 the T3000 Series II, an enhanced version of
the popular hand portable series, went to market. Early in 1998 Tait's
top selling T2000 range was also updated with the launch of the T2000 Series
II.
Today Tait has eleven subsidiaries, ten of which are offshore, serving dealers and providing the highest quality customer service and product support. The company employs over 900 people and over 95% of its sales are with overseas customers.
